Service Learning Assessment Rubric

The goal for the service learning experience is to synthesize your service experiences with our studies of foundational issues in the field of education. To realize this goal you are to write an essay addressing each of the four queries described in the Service Learning assignment prompt and to regularly share and discuss in class your service experiences in the context of the foundational issues germane to our class.  The following two rubrics will be consulted for assessment purposes:

Service Reflection & Analysis Presentation Assessment Rubric 1x

During the designated class period, each LC member will have approximately five (~5) minutes to:

  • Discuss their service site, including the facility, the program and the people; and/or
  • Describe their service learning responsibilities and experiences; and/or
  • Analyze their service learning based on assigned and selected readings in the foundations of education; and
  • Encourage a brief discussion.

Exceeding | The presenter demonstrates a rigorous and in-depth understanding of context and purpose in selecting an appropriately complex topic and thoroughly developing and supporting it through appropriate organization, presentation, and content knowledge. [5 grade points]

Meeting | The presenter demonstrates a thorough understanding of context and purpose in selecting an appropriately complex topic and thoroughly developing and supporting it through appropriate organization, presentation, and content knowledge. [3 grade points]

Approaching | The presenter demonstrates an awareness of context and purpose in selecting a topic and attempting to develop and support it through appropriate organization, presentation, and content knowledge. [1 grade point]

Needing Improvement | The presenter demonstrates minimal or no attention to context and purpose in selecting a topic and/or the topic may be unsuitable, and/or the presenter may not develop or support the topic through appropriate organization of the presentation. [0 grade point]


Service Reflection & Analysis Essay Assessment Rubric 2x

Write an essay addressing each of the four queries described in the Service Learning assignment prompt about the intersection of your service learning experience and the foundational topics and issues studied in class. (Approximately 1500 words not including cited references).

Exceeding | In responding to the Service Learning assignment prompt, the writer demonstrates a rigorous and in-depth understanding of content and purpose through the development and support of their blog post. Appropriate organization and style is evident. [5 points]

Meeting | In responding to the Service Learning assignment prompt, the writer demonstrates a thorough understanding of content and purpose through the development and support of her blog post. Appropriate organization and style is evident. [3 points]

Approaching | In responding to the Service Learning assignment prompt, the writer demonstrates an awareness of content and purpose and attempts to develop and support her blog post. Appropriate organization and style is evident. [1 point]

Needing Improvement | In responding to the Service Learning assignment prompt, the writer demonstrates minimal or no attention to content and purpose. Blog post topic may be unsuitable, and/or the writer may not develop or support an argument. Appropriate organization and style might not be evident. [0 point]
